After seeing Lair Morgan, Matt Ramsey and Trevor Rosen at Tequila Reef, I met up with Karsten and told him John Rich (from Big & Rich — he’s the short one in the dark hat) was in On The Rocks, so we popped in there to get a beer and to check out that scene. I happened to end up standing at the bar shoulder-to-shoulder with John Rich, waiting to order a beer, and he let me order my drink first. Very gentlemanly. 😉
A band called Tennessee Trailer Choir started playing, and John Rich and Karsten and I and half the bar ended up standing around the front of the stage because this band was so amazingly good. They played a cover of “Free Fallin'” that was wonderful, and a cover of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” with an old-school hip hop break in the middle where some guy who was in the audience jumped up on one of the speakers and was given a microphone to rap along with the break.
But when they finished that song, it was after 11, and I was about to turn into a pumpkin. So we headed for home, agreeing that we hoped this was just a taste of what we’ll be able to do on a regular basis someday not too far in the future: hang out ’til late listening to great music, surrounded by colorful people, having a wonderful time.
I really like On the Rocks, cheesy but true. I usually end up being forced to go to Tin Roof, which is okay, but the smell does me in every time. Perhaps because OTR is brand-new, it doesn’t have that cigarette/fried grease/stale beer smell stuck in the walls.
Out of all your last posts, trust me to focus on the food: speaking of veg food near West End, where you aware that Vandy’s Jewish student organization runs an all-veg restaurant called Grins? I am dying to go but S refuses….here’s a wild idea totally violating LJ etiquette, but you and I should go have lunch there one day! If you’re half as cool IRL as you are on LJ, you are definitely people to know. 😉
Well, shoot. I’m only at most a quarter as cool in person as on LJ, so I guess it’s not worth it.
On the other hand, if you want to risk it, I’m definitely interested in meeting you for lunch! I’ve been to Grins — it was pretty good! — and would totally do it again. Next Wednesday the 8th or Thursday the 9th would work for me, and then not for several weeks. When’s good for you?
That’s what Nashville is all about. Music, music, music.
I like the Gravity place next to OTR. Good atmosphere and the strongest drinks in town.
Smoove! Not the 8th, because I have a feeling I’m running home to meet the chimney guy. 9th it is, you pick the time since I can just walk over.
One of my high shool friends introduced me to the joy of “Save a horse…” over Thanksgiving break. Kate, is it just me, or is that the world’s first new wave Country song. There’s something about the beats, and something about his delivery that gives it that feel for me.
I guess that would make “I Wanna be a Cowboy”, by Boys Don’t Cry, the world’s first country New Wave song. 😉
What do you think?
Funny! I love that classification system.
Love it, love it, love it. 🙂
How ’bout, like, 11:45? And maybe we’ll beat the lunch rush by just a few minutes. If that’s too early, let me know — I’m flexible.
Good recommendation! We went there last night. I liked the ambience.
